| Literary Term of the Week: Static v. Dynamic Characters and Direct v. Indirect Characterization Static characters are characters that do not experience basic character changes during the course of the story. Dynamic characters are characters that experience changes throughout the plot of a story. Although the change may be sudden, it is expected based on the story’s events. (http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/lesson_images/lesson1050/DynamicStatic.pdf) Direct characterization, also known as explicit characterization, consists of the author telling the audience what a character is like. Indirect characterization, on the other hand, consists of the author showing the audience what kind of person a character is through the character’s thoughts, words, and deeds. This requires the audience to make inferences about why a character would say or do those things. This type of characterization is also known as implicit characterization. While it takes more time to develop a character through indirect characterization, it often leaves a deeper impression on the reader than direct statements about what a character is like. Literary Term of the Week: THEMe "The theme of any literary work is the base that acts as a foundation for the entire literary piece. The theme links all aspects of the literary work with one another and is basically the main subject. The theme can be an enduring pattern or motif throughout the literary work, occurring in a complex, long winding manner or it can be short and succinct and provide a certain insight into the story.
